Last-Minute Job Interview, Here’s What to Focus on

Finally! The call you’ve been waiting for. You’ve got an interview for your dream job! But wait – first thing tomorrow morning? How can you possibly be ready? Here are a few last-minute tips to help you prepare and get the offer – even at the last minute.

Wardrobe

It’s too late to dry clean your suit now, but pull it out and take a quick look. Hit it with a lint roller and the iron if you need to. Make sure you have a clean, pressed shirt and give your shoes a quick polish. If you want to be really prepared, always have an outfit pressed and ready to go.

Transportation

Google the location so you know where it is and how long it takes to get there. If you have a GPS, that’s great, but it never hurts to be prepared. Add a bit of a buffer to your drive time to allow for traffic and parking. And make sure you have a full tank of gas.

Social Media

Check out your accounts and the company’s. Lock down or delete anything you wouldn’t want an interviewer to see. Take a look at their LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to see what they’ve been sharing lately. It’s the easiest way to see what’s important to them. Look up your interviewer, too if you can. A little bit of familiarity can help you walk in the door with confidence.

Research

Browse the company website to get a thorough understanding of their business and their culture. Check out their news section to see what they are working on or most proud of. Develop several questions to ask about their business goals or upcoming projects and what part you can play in their future success.

Interview

Prepare answers to common questions. There are a few questions that every interviewer seems to ask, so it’s wise to be ready for them. Top interview questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Tell me about a challenge you’ve overcome.
  • What is your proudest accomplishment? How did you achieve it?
  • What are your career goals and objectives in the next five years?
  • Why do you want to work for our company?
  • Why should we hire you over other candidates?

Back it up

Be ready with concrete examples from your work history. Know how you want to present yourself in the course of your interview. Examine the job posting to see where your experience correlates to the employer’s needs.

Ask your recruiter for advice on preparing for the interview and insights particular to the company. It’s in their best interest that you present yourself well.
